👤 Mirko Lorenz (Data journalist and trainer at ABZV, a German press academy — he built the tool free, where newsroom staff get trained.)🌐 site𝕏LinkedIn

A data journalist gave away a free chart tool from inside a journalism academy — it became the newsroom default.

Will it work? · our read
Became the default. Thirteen years of being the free, obvious choice makes Datawrapper the newsroom default — but the tech is copyable, and Canva and Prezi already own its closest rivals.

Revenue is a third-party ESTIMATE, not a disclosed or filed figure. Datawrapper is a private German GmbH (HRB 212520 B, Berlin) that does not publish revenue; as a small company it is exempt from filing a profit-and-loss statement, and North Data paywalls its numbers, so no first-party or filed figure is reachable. The $3.2M ARR headline is Latka's 2025 estimate; Growjo estimates a similar range. Because the company has stated no revenue at all, the card leads with the named estimate (EST), not a number anyone at Datawrapper stands behind — verified:false. First-party and confirmed: the free/open-source launch on 23 Feb 2012, funded by the ABZV journalism-training institution where founder Mirko Lorenz was a trainer (Datawrapper's own 10-year post); a team of 'more than 30 people' and independence (about-us); and live pricing — Free, Pro $21, Business $39 per seat, Enterprise, plus $499/mo custom themes. No funding rounds are on record (Crunchbase, Tracxn), consistent with that bootstrapped history. Marquee customers (NYT, Reuters, Harvard, Vox) appear as logos on the pricing page. We never score you.
